What is Gambling Addiction (Pathological Gambling)?

Gambling addiction (pathological gambling) is a behavioral addiction disorder in which the person continually fails to stop or control gambling despite being aware of the harmful consequences and is associated with disrupted reward-punishment system functioning.

Although it does not involve a psychoactive substance, this addiction pattern affects brain reward circuits. Increasing bets, gambling again to recover losses, accumulating debt and lying are characteristic findings.

It frequently coexists with depression, anxiety and substance use disorders. Treatment usually combines psychotherapy, support groups (Gamblers Anonymous) and, when necessary, medication.

Repeated gambling to recover losses
Restlessness when trying to cut back

Hiding gambling activities from family and loved ones
Serious problems at work, school or in relationships

Risk Factors

Family history of gambling addiction
Early-life gambling experience
