What is Digital Addiction in Young Adults?

Digital addiction includes internet gaming disorder, problematic internet use, social media addiction, smartphone addiction and pathological online gambling.

Internet gaming disorder is included in DSM-5 Section III as a condition for further study, with criteria including preoccupation, withdrawal, tolerance, unsuccessful control and continued use despite problems.

ICD-11 includes gaming disorder as an official diagnosis with persistent or recurrent gaming behavior with impaired control, increasing priority given to gaming and continuation despite negative consequences.

Neurobiological mechanisms involve dopaminergic reward circuits, prefrontal executive control networks and similarities with substance addiction.

High comorbidity exists with depression, anxiety, ADHD, social anxiety and other addictive behaviors.

Symptoms

Excessive time spent online, gaming or on social media beyond intended duration with loss of time perception.
Withdrawal symptoms including irritability, anxiety, sadness when access is restricted.
Tolerance with need for increasing time or stimulation to achieve same satisfaction.
Failed attempts to reduce use despite recognition of problems.
Neglect of academic, work, family, social or self-care responsibilities; sleep disturbance, eye strain, musculoskeletal complaints and physical health decline.

Risk Factors

Adolescent and young adult age with developing prefrontal control systems.
Underlying anxiety, depression, ADHD, social phobia or autism spectrum traits.
Family conflict, parental absence, low parental monitoring and adverse childhood experiences.
Peer influence, cultural acceptance of digital activities and academic pressure.
