What is Dermatillomania (Skin Picking Disorder)?

Dermatillomania, also called excoriation disorder, is a disorder defined by repeatedly picking at one's healthy or blemished skin and being unable to stop the behavior. It is most commonly seen on the face, arms, hands, and back.

The behavior is performed to reduce tension or to obtain pleasure; it is followed by feelings of shame and regret. Scars, infections, and permanent marks may develop on the skin.
