What is Depersonalization/Derealization Disorder?

Depersonalization is a sense of detachment from one's own emotions, body, or thoughts, while derealization is the perception that the environment is unreal, dreamlike, or distant. In this disorder, symptoms occur frequently and persistently, impairing functioning.

Patients are aware that their sense of reality is intact but describe emotional numbness and an experience of 'watching life through a film.' Stress, trauma, and substance use may trigger episodes.

Diagnosis is based on a careful history and exclusion of alternative causes. Treatment involves psychotherapy with medication support when needed.
