What is Dental Erosion?

Dental erosion is irreversible loss of tooth structure on enamel and dentine surfaces caused by chemical attack of acids.

Intrinsic acids (gastric reflux, vomiting) and extrinsic acids (acidic drinks, citrus, vinegar) cause erosion. Diagnosis uses BEWE (Basic Erosive Wear Examination) scoring.

Symptoms

Cold sensitivity in teeth
Yellowish appearance (dentine exposure)
Sharpening on incisor edges
Cup-like indentations on the chewing surface
Dull surface loss

Risk Factors

GERD (gastro-oesophageal reflux disease)
Bulimia nervosa, recurrent vomiting
Acidic drinks (cola, sports/energy drinks, fruit juices)
Wine tasting (occupational exposure)
Dry mouth, low salivary buffer capacity
Athletes, swimmers (low pH water)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Persistent cold/sweet sensitivity
  • Visible indentations or yellowing on tooth surfaces
  • Suspected GERD or eating disorder
  • Generalised tooth wear or sensitivity

Treatment Methods

01
Aetiological treatment (PPI in GERD, eating-disorder support)
02
Diet modification (limiting acidic drinks)
03
Drinking water rinse - waiting 30 minutes before brushing
04
Fluoride treatment (varnish, prescription toothpaste 5000 ppm)
05
Composite resin restorations (in mild-moderate erosion)
06
Onlay/crown (in severe loss)
07
Mouth-rinsing strategies for bulimic patients (sodium bicarbonate)
08
BEWE follow-up (annual progression assessment)

Ağız ve Diş Sağlığı

Dental erosion is the chemical (acidic) dissolution and loss of enamel and dentin in tooth structure unrelated to bacterial caries; arises from extrinsic (acidic foods/drinks) and intrinsic (gastric reflux, vomiting) sources, exhibiting a typical pattern.

Diş Çürüğü

Impacted Tooth

Ağız ve Diş Sağlığı

An impacted tooth — most often a wisdom tooth — has not erupted fully and remains in the jaw bone or gum. It can lead to pericoronitis, caries and cysts.

Ağız ve Diş Sağlığı

A dental implant is a titanium screw placed in the jawbone that supports a crown, bridge or denture, providing the closest possible function and aesthetics to a natural tooth.

Teeth Whitening

Ağız ve Diş Sağlığı

Teeth whitening lightens tooth color using hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide gels. In-office (professional) bleaching uses higher concentrations with light activation for faster results; home bleaching uses custom trays with lower concentrations over 1–4 weeks. Safety depends on healthy teeth, correct concentration, isolation of gums and transient sensitivity management.

Orthodontics is the dental specialty that corrects the alignment of the teeth and jaws, providing both aesthetic and functional benefits at any age, from childhood through adulthood.

Gingival Recession (Gum Recession)

Ağız ve Diş Sağlığı

Gingival recession is the apical displacement of the gingival margin with exposure of the root surface. It may be localized or generalized and results from mechanical trauma, periodontal disease, thin biotype or anatomic factors. Recession can cause root sensitivity, caries and aesthetic concerns; management includes cause elimination and surgical root coverage when indicated.
