What is Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis?

Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis is a rare vascular disease in which clots form in the veins draining blood from the brain or in the dural sinuses. Unlike classic arterial stroke, it usually occurs in young women and is associated with pregnancy, the postpartum period, or oral contraceptive use.

Symptoms can be wide-ranging; headache is the most common finding and worsens progressively throughout the day. Seizures, altered consciousness, paralysis, and visual disturbances may follow.

Early diagnosis and anticoagulant therapy are life-saving. MR venography and CT venography are used in diagnosis.
