What is Bruxism?

Bruxism is classified into two forms: sleep (SB) and awake (AB). Sleep bruxism is considered a sleep motor disorder; it is characterized by brain activations and rhythmic masticatory muscle activity.

Stress, anxiety, and sleep apnea are the most important associated factors. SSRI and dopaminergic drugs can trigger or worsen bruxism.

In the long term, it predisposes to tooth enamel wear, fractures, gum problems, and joint pathologies.

Symptoms

Morning jaw pain and temporal muscle tension
Night-time teeth grinding sound heard by the partner
Flattening and wear on tooth surfaces
Tooth fracture or need for filling-crown replacement
Headache with fatigue
Bite marks inside the tongue or cheek

Risk Factors

Stress and anxiety (strong association)
Sleep apnea
Excessive caffeine and alcohol consumption
Smoking
SSRI or dopaminergic drugs
Malocclusion (bite disorder)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If morning jaw pain or headache occurs persistently
  • Visible wear on the teeth
  • Frequent filling or crown replacement in a short time
  • Clicking and restriction in the jaw joint
  • If sleep apnea suspicion accompanies

Treatment Methods

01
Night guard (occlusal splint) — tooth protection
02
Stress and anxiety management (CBT, relaxation techniques)
03
Botulinum toxin A injection (masseter and temporal muscle)
04
Sleep apnea treatment (if accompanying)
05
Dental restoration (to repair worn tooth structure)
06
Medication change (in SSRI-related bruxism by doctor's decision)
