What is Treatment of Bipolar Depression?

Bipolar depression is the longest and most challenging phase of bipolar disorder. Patients are estimated to spend roughly 30-50% of their lives in depressive episodes.

Unlike unipolar depression, antidepressant monotherapy carries a risk of triggering manic episodes and rapid cycling. The treatment strategy therefore differs and emphasizes mood stabilizers or atypical antipsychotics.

Quetiapine, lurasidone, lamotrigine, and lithium are evidence-based options for bipolar depression. Adding psychotherapy and social rhythm therapy enhances treatment outcomes.

Symptoms

Profound low mood and hopelessness
Loss of energy and psychomotor slowing
Excessive sleep (hypersomnia)
Increased appetite and weight gain
Difficulty concentrating
Suicidal ideation (high risk)

Risk Factors

Substance use
Seasonal triggers
