What is Antisocial Personality Disorder?

Antisocial personality disorder is a Cluster B personality disorder defined by features such as disregard for others' rights and feelings, disregard for laws and social norms, deceitfulness, and lack of remorse.

For diagnosis, the person must be over 18 years old and have a history of conduct disorder before age 15. Childhood abuse, neglect, and hereditary factors play a role in etiology.

It is a difficult disorder to treat; however, structured therapies and treatment of accompanying addiction and mood problems may be helpful.

Symptoms

Tendency to repeat unlawful behaviors
Lying and deceiving others
Impulsivity and lack of planning
Irritability and aggressiveness
Disregard for the safety of others
Constant irresponsibility (work, financial)
Lack of remorse

Risk Factors

Male sex
Childhood abuse and neglect
Family history of antisocial behavior or addiction
Low socioeconomic level
Early-onset conduct disorder
Substance use
Hereditary predisposition
