What is Adjustment Disorder?

Adjustment disorder is a short-term condition characterized by emotional or behavioral reactions to a clearly identifiable stressor — such as job loss, separation, illness diagnosis, or the death of a loved one — that are out of proportion to what would be expected.

Adjustment disorder may include depressive and anxiety symptoms; however, it usually resolves within 6 months after the stressor subsides. If symptoms persist independent of the stressor or last longer than 6 months, an alternative diagnosis should be considered.

Psychotherapy is the cornerstone of treatment. Strengthening coping skills, social support and short-term medication can also be helpful.

Symptoms

Sadness, worry or hopelessness disproportionate to the stressor
Impairment of daily and occupational functioning
Sleep disturbance and changes in appetite
Social withdrawal
Excessive worry about the future
Difficulty concentrating

Risk Factors

Intensity and duration of current stressors
Poor coping skills
Lack of social support
Pre-existing mental health problems
Multiple stressors occurring simultaneously
