What is Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)?

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulty sustaining attention, impulsivity, and/or hyperactivity. It affects roughly 5-7% of school-age children and persists in 2-5% of adults.

ADHD is divided into three presentations: predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive, and combined type. Because the inattentive presentation is more common in girls, the diagnosis is often missed.

If left untreated, ADHD can lead to school failure, relationship problems, increased accident risk, and a higher risk of substance use. Symptoms can be effectively managed through a combination of medication and behavioral interventions.

Symptoms

Difficulty sustaining attention and being easily distracted
Difficulty completing tasks and organizational difficulties
Difficulty waiting one's turn and impatience
Talking excessively and interrupting others
Restlessness and inability to remain seated (in children)
Forgetfulness and frequently losing everyday objects

Risk Factors

Family history of ADHD (strong genetic component)
Premature birth and low birth weight
Smoking or alcohol exposure during pregnancy
Lead exposure
Perinatal complications

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If a child's school performance and adaptation are seriously impaired
  • If an adult's work or relationship issues align with ADHD symptoms
  • If traffic accident risk has increased
  • If depression or anxiety is also present

Treatment Methods

01
Psychostimulants: methylphenidate, amphetamine derivatives (evidence-based first-line)
02
Non-stimulant medications: atomoxetine, clonidine (alternatives)
03
Behavioral therapy (priority in preschool and children)
04
Parent training and school interventions
05
Training in organizational and time-management skills
06
Individual coaching and CBT for adult ADHD
