What is Yellow Fever?

Yellow fever is an acute viral disease caused by the yellow fever virus (YFV) of the Flavivirus family. It is transmitted by mosquitoes of the Aedes and Haemagogus genus, primarily Aedes aegypti.

The disease is named for the jaundice seen in severe forms. There are two epidemiological forms: forest cycle (sylvatic) and urban cycle (urban).

An effective live attenuated vaccine providing single-dose long-term protection is available. Supportive treatment is applied in severe cases with high mortality.

Symptoms

Sudden onset high fever
Chills, headache, muscle pain
Nausea, vomiting, weakness
Conjunctival redness
Temporary improvement on day 2-5, then 'toxic phase'
Jaundice, bleeding tendency, liver-kidney failure
Shock and multi-organ failure (in severe cases)

Risk Factors

Travel of unvaccinated people to endemic regions
Working in forest and rural areas
Rainy and hot seasons
Proximity to mosquito breeding areas
Outbreak periods in cities
Inadequate vaccination program
Advanced age and accompanying diseases

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • When fever and weakness begin after travel to endemic area
  • When jaundice and darkening of urine color occur
  • When bleeding signs (nose, gums, blood in vomit) develop
  • If there is severe abdominal pain and vomiting
  • When pre/post-vaccine evaluation is needed

Treatment Methods

01
No effective antiviral; supportive treatment
02
Fluid and electrolyte support
03
Bleeding control, blood products if necessary
04
Intensive care for organ failures
05
Fever control (avoiding aspirin)
06
Yellow fever vaccine before travel
