What is Flu (Influenza)?

Influenza is an acute respiratory disease caused by influenza A, B, and C viruses. It spreads easily via droplets; it causes seasonal outbreaks in the autumn and winter months.

Unlike the common cold, flu starts suddenly and is much more severe. High fever, severe muscle and joint pain, headache, and deep fatigue are among the prominent symptoms. Runny nose and sore throat may be seen in the early stage of the flu.

Elderly, young children, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic illness are at high risk for flu complications (pneumonia, myocarditis). Annual flu vaccine is particularly recommended for these groups.

Symptoms

Sudden-onset high fever (above 38.5°C)
Severe muscle and joint pain
Deep fatigue and weakness
Dry cough and sore throat
Headache
Runny or stuffy nose
Loss of appetite, nausea (especially in children)

Risk Factors

Age 65 and over or children under 5
Pregnancy
Chronic lung, heart, or kidney disease
Diabetes and immune system suppression
Being unvaccinated
Working in crowded enclosed environments
Being a healthcare worker

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • When shortness of breath or chest pain develops
  • If fever persists above 39°C and does not respond to medications
  • If there is confusion or altered consciousness
  • For any flu symptoms in infants and young children
  • Within 48 hours in individuals in the risk group

Treatment Methods

01
Oseltamivir or zanamivir (antiviral — starting within the first 48 hours increases efficacy)
02
Plenty of rest and fluid intake
03
Paracetamol or ibuprofen for fever and pain
04
Annual influenza vaccination (the most effective method of protection)
05
Prevention of transmission with hand hygiene and mask use
06
Hospitalization and supportive treatment if complications develop
