What is Wound Care and Healing?

Wound care is the management of damage such as cuts, lacerations, burns, or ulcers occurring in the skin and deep tissues in a way that protects from infection and supports the physiological healing process.

Wound healing consists of four stages: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. Disruption at any stage of this process can lead to chronic wounds, hypertrophic scars, or keloid formation.

Diabetic foot ulcers, pressure ulcers (decubitus), and venous insufficiency ulcers are chronic wound types that require specialist multidisciplinary follow-up. Negative pressure wound therapy (VAC) and advanced dressing products provide effective results in these cases.

Symptoms

Redness, warmth, and edema at wound edges (sign of infection)
Purulent or foul-smelling discharge from the wound
Increased pain and tenderness
Wound edges not approximating (open wound)
Inadequate granulation tissue formation
No healing after 4 weeks in chronic wounds

Risk Factors

Diabetes and peripheral vascular disease
Malnutrition and vitamin C deficiency
Corticosteroid and immunosuppressive drug use
Smoking (reduces tissue perfusion)
Obesity and immobility
History of radiotherapy

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Expanding redness around the wound, fever, or red streaks
  • Tetanus vaccine evaluation for dirty or deep wounds
  • Wounds involving bites or animal contact
  • Non-healing wounds exceeding 4 weeks
  • Foot wounds in diabetic individuals (urgent evaluation)

Treatment Methods

01
Wound cleaning: cleaning with saline or appropriate antiseptic and removal of foreign bodies
02
Primary suture closure: in clean, fresh lacerations (within 6-8 hours)
03
Advanced dressing products: hydrocolloid, polyurethane foam, silicone, alginate, and silver-containing dressings
04
Negative pressure wound therapy (VAC): to increase granulation in chronic and complex wounds
05
Debridement: cleaning necrotic tissue with surgical, enzymatic, or autolytic methods
06
Treatment of underlying causes (diabetes control, pressure relief, venous insufficiency management)
