What is Inguinal Hernia?

Inguinal hernia occurs when intestine or fatty tissue escapes outward through a weak point in the groin region of the abdominal wall. It is the most common type of hernia and is especially common in men.

Conditions that increase intra-abdominal pressure (heavy lifting, chronic cough, constipation) can trigger hernia formation. Over time, the hernia grows larger, forming an increasingly visible swelling.

The most serious complication of inguinal hernia is entrapment of the hernia contents (incarceration). In this case, if blood flow to the intestine is cut off, a life-threatening condition (strangulation) can develop, requiring emergency surgery.

Symptoms

Swelling in the groin or scrotum area (especially prominent when standing or straining)
Pain or discomfort in the groin area
Pain worsening with heavy lifting, coughing, or bending
Swelling shrinking or disappearing when lying down
A feeling of fullness in the scrotum in men
Rarely, nausea and signs of intestinal obstruction

Risk Factors

Male sex (9 times more common in men)
Advanced age (weakening of abdominal wall muscles)
Family history of hernia
Chronic constipation or straining during defecation
Chronic cough (smokers)
Heavy physical work or exercise
Previous groin surgery

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Newly noticed swelling or lump in the groin
  • Hernia swelling suddenly not going back inside
  • Suddenly intensifying pain in the swollen area
  • If nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain accompany (emergency)
  • Redness and warmth in the hernia area

Treatment Methods

01
Laparoscopic hernia repair (TEP/TAPP): closed technique in which a mesh is placed to close the hernia
02
Open hernia repair (Lichtenstein technique): repair using a mesh under local or general anesthesia
03
In infants and children, primary repair without mesh is preferred
04
Emergency surgery in case of incarceration or strangulation
05
Avoidance of heavy lifting for 2–4 weeks after surgery
06
Treatment of underlying causes such as constipation and chronic cough
