What is Appendicitis?

Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix, a small extension attached to the beginning of the large intestine. Although the function of the appendix is not fully known, its inflammation can lead to serious abdominal infection.

The disease usually begins with obstruction of the appendix. The obstruction can be caused by stool, a foreign body, or infection. After the obstruction, bacterial proliferation and increased pressure develop within the appendix.

Untreated appendicitis can cause perforation of the appendix within 24-72 hours. In this situation, infection spreading into the abdomen (peritonitis) can become life-threatening. Therefore, appendicitis is a medical emergency.

Symptoms

Pain starting around the navel and radiating to the lower right abdomen
Nausea and vomiting
Loss of appetite
Mild fever (37.5–38.5°C)
Stiffness and tenderness in the abdominal muscles
Pain worsening with walking or coughing
Bowel irregularity (diarrhea or constipation)

Risk Factors

Young individuals between 10–30 years of age (most common age group)
Male sex (slightly more common in men)
Family history of appendicitis
Low-fiber eating habits
Intra-abdominal infections
Intestinal parasitic infections

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Progressively increasing lower right abdominal pain within hours
  • Abdominal pain with fever
  • Stiffness of abdominal muscles and extreme tenderness to touch
  • Severe abdominal pain with nausea and vomiting
  • Sudden relief of pain (can be a sign of perforation)

Treatment Methods

01
Laparoscopic appendectomy: minimally invasive removal of the appendix (gold-standard treatment)
02
Open appendectomy: classic surgical method preferred in complicated or perforated cases
03
Antibiotic therapy: may be applied before or instead of surgery in selected uncomplicated cases
04
Intra-abdominal washing and drainage procedures in the case of perforation
05
Postoperative pain management and early mobilization
06
Adherence to diet and activity restrictions after discharge
