What is Umbilical Hernia?

Umbilical hernia forms when internal organs or fatty tissue protrude under the skin through weakness or persistent opening in the umbilical region of the abdominal wall. It is particularly common in infants and women who have given birth.

In infants, it occurs because the umbilical ring fails to close after the umbilical cord is cut, and it most often closes spontaneously by 3-4 years of age. In adults, conditions that increase intra-abdominal pressure play a triggering role.

Umbilical hernias in adults usually do not resolve on their own and require surgical treatment. Elective (planned) surgery is performed in uncomplicated cases, while emergency intervention is mandatory in entrapment situations.

Symptoms

Soft swelling around the navel that reduces with pressure
Swelling prominent when standing, coughing, or straining
Swelling that shrinks or disappears when lying down
Pain or tenderness in the umbilical area
Discomfort increasing with exercise or heavy lifting
Persistent prominent swelling in large hernias

Risk Factors

Premature birth or low birth weight (in infants)
Obesity
Multiple pregnancies or multiple gestations
Ascites (fluid accumulation in the abdomen)
Heavy and continuous physical work
Previous abdominal surgery

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If the umbilical swelling does not go in or has hardened
  • If sudden severe pain has started in the hernia area
  • If nausea, vomiting accompanies
  • Redness or discoloration over the swelling
  • Umbilical hernia that still persists in children over 4 years of age

Treatment Methods

01
Laparoscopic repair: closure of the hernia with small incisions using mesh
02
Open surgical repair: repair with mesh or sutures through an incision below the navel
03
In infants, wait-and-see policy until 3-4 years of age (expectation of spontaneous closure)
04
Emergency surgery: in incarcerated or strangulated hernias
05
Weight control and avoidance of conditions that increase intra-abdominal pressure after surgery
