What is Vasectomy?

Vasectomy is the prevention of sperm from mixing with the ejaculate by cutting or ligating both vasa deferentia. It is the most effective and safe method of permanent contraception in men.

It can be performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. There are two techniques, conventional and no-scalpel. The no-scalpel vasectomy is less invasive, less painful, and provides faster recovery.

Success is confirmed by semen analysis 3 months later or after about 20 ejaculations. Vasectomy is not a reversible method; revision surgeries (vasovasostomy) exist but their success rates are low.
