What is UroLift — Prostatic Urethral Lift?

The Prostatic Urethral Lift (PUL, UroLift system) is a minimally invasive treatment for lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Permanent suture-based implants are placed transurethrally to retract the obstructing lateral lobes of the prostate from the urethral lumen.

Ideal candidates have an estimated prostate volume of 30-80 mL, no median lobe enlargement, and a desire to preserve sexual function. The procedure can be performed under local, sedation, or general anesthesia in an outpatient setting and typically lasts under 30 minutes; catheterization is brief or unnecessary.

Compared with TURP, PUL has a more favorable side-effect profile with preservation of antegrade ejaculation and erectile function, but provides somewhat lower flow rate improvements. Re-treatment rates over five years are about 13-15%, making careful patient selection essential.
