What is Uric Acid Stone?

Uric acid stones account for approximately 5-10% of kidney stones. They form from the deposition of uric acid crystals, with low urinary pH (<5.5) being the most important etiologic factor.

Hyperuricemia, gout, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, obesity, and chronic diarrhea predispose to uric acid stone formation. A high-purine diet (meat, seafood, alcohol) increases stone formation.

Because they are radiolucent on plain radiographs, diagnosis is made with CT or ultrasound. An important feature is that they can dissolve with urinary alkalinization (potassium citrate). Therefore, medical therapy is often sufficient.
