What is Ureterorenoscopy (URS)?

Ureterorenoscopy (URS) is a minimally invasive method in which stones are visualized and fragmented with a holmium laser through rigid or flexible thin cameras advanced from the urethra to the bladder, then to the ureter, and if necessary, to the renal collecting system.

Rigid URS is generally used for distal ureter stones, while flexible URS (fURS) is used for stones in the renal collecting system and proximal stones. No incision is made; the entire procedure is performed via the natural body pathway.

URS provides a higher stone-free rate than ESWL and works independently of stone composition. The procedure is generally performed under general or spinal anesthesia; the great majority are completed as day cases.

Symptoms

URS is not a disease but a diagnostic and treatment method
Transient dysuria (burning) and blood in urine are expected after the procedure
If a JJ stent is placed, frequent urination and mild pain may be experienced
If fever develops (sign of infection), consult a urologist

Risk Factors

Ureteric stricture or tortuosity (technical difficulty)
Active urinary tract infection (requires treatment before procedure)
Bleeding diathesis
Previous pelvic surgery or radiotherapy

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Urological evaluation for treatment of ureteric or kidney stones
  • Stones in which ESWL has failed or is not suitable
  • Fever, severe pain, or inability to urinate after URS
  • Appointment for JJ stent change or removal

Treatment Methods

01
Rigid URS + holmium laser lithotripsy: in distal and middle ureter stones
02
Flexible URS (fURS) + laser: in renal collecting system and proximal stones
03
Removal of stone fragments: with a basket catheter
04
JJ stent placement: temporary stent after edema or ureteric trauma
05
Pre-procedure urine culture and antibiotic prophylaxis
06
Day case procedure; same-day discharge if general condition is good
