What is Laparoscopic Surgery?

Laparoscopic surgery (closed surgery or keyhole surgery) is a minimally invasive surgical method performed through 3-4 small (5-12 mm) ports using a camera (laparoscope) and special surgical instruments instead of a large abdominal incision.

The laparoscope, inserted into the abdominal cavity inflated with carbon dioxide gas (pneumoperitoneum), transmits the image to a monitor. The surgeon watches the entire operation on the screen and manipulates the instruments remotely.

Laparoscopy is applied across a very wide range including appendectomy, cholecystectomy, hernia repair, bariatric surgery, colorectal surgery, and gynecological operations. It is performed under general anesthesia.

Symptoms

This topic is a method description, not a surgical indication; indications depend on the underlying disease
Mild shoulder pain after laparoscopy (from carbon dioxide gas)
Minimal pain and tenderness in the incision areas
Pain level returning to normal within 1-2 days after surgery
Most patients are discharged the same day or the next day

Risk Factors

Previous abdominal surgeries (risk of adhesions)
Serious cardiopulmonary disease (tolerance of CO2 pneumoperitoneum)
Advanced obesity (technical difficulty)
Bleeding disorders
Very extensive or perforated lesions (conversion to open surgery may be needed)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • General surgery consultation for the disease requiring surgery
  • If fever or abdominal pain worsens after laparoscopy
  • If redness, discharge, or swelling develops at the incision site
  • If difficulty swallowing or intense nausea-vomiting persists

Treatment Methods

01
Standard laparoscopic method: surgery under CO2 pneumoperitoneum with 3-4 ports
02
Single port laparoscopy (SILS): ultra-minimally invasive method through a single incision
03
Robotic surgery: advantage of 3D view and tremor-free joint movement with the da Vinci system
04
Enhanced recovery protocols (ERAS): early mobilization, oral feeding
05
Conversion to open surgery in case of complications
