What is Total Thyroidectomy Complications?

Total thyroidectomy is a safe surgical procedure in experienced hands but carries certain complications due to vital anatomical structures around it. Complication rates are low among experienced endocrine surgeons.

The most important complications are recurrent laryngeal nerve injury (hoarseness), hypoparathyroidism (low calcium), postoperative bleeding/hematoma, wound infection, and thyroid storm.

Good preoperative evaluation, intraoperative nerve monitoring, and careful parathyroid preservation technique reduce complications. Calcium monitoring and voice assessment in the early postoperative period are critically important.
