What is Telogen Effluvium?

Telogen effluvium is a diffuse hair loss that develops when a large portion of hair follicles synchronously transitions from the anagen to the telogen phase.

Common causes include febrile infection, the postpartum period, major surgery, sudden weight loss, severe stress, thyroid disease, and certain medications. Hair loss usually begins 2-3 months after the triggering event.

Patients may complain of hundreds of hairs falling per day, but generally improves spontaneously within 6-12 months.

Symptoms

Heavy and diffuse hair loss
Visible loss during washing and combing
No noticeable change in the hairline
No miniaturized follicles
Positive hair pull test
Sense of decreased hair density
Psychological discomfort

Risk Factors

Postpartum period
Severe illness and surgery
Severe diet and sudden weight loss
Thyroid diseases
Iron, zinc, vitamin D deficiency
Certain medications
Intense psychological stress

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Daily hair loss exceeding 150 strands
  • Hair loss lasting more than 6 months
  • Significant loss along the hairline
  • Accompanied by fatigue, weight changes, cold intolerance
  • For iron and thyroid function tests
