What is TAPP Hernia Repair?

Transabdominal Preperitoneal (TAPP) repair is a laparoscopic approach in which the surgeon enters the abdominal cavity through three trocars, opens the peritoneum, exposes the myopectineal orifice, and places a large polypropylene mesh in the preperitoneal space.

It allows simultaneous evaluation of bilateral and recurrent hernias, identification of contralateral occult defects, and direct visualization of all groin hernia sites (direct, indirect, femoral, obturator).

Compared with open repair it offers less postoperative pain, faster return to work (1-2 weeks), and better cosmetic outcomes. Recurrence rates are 1-2% and chronic groin pain is less frequent than with the open technique.

Symptoms

Bilateral inguinal hernia
Recurrent inguinal hernia
Femoral or atypical hernia
Active patient wanting fast recovery
Need for cosmetic outcome
Suspicion of contralateral occult hernia
Selected sportive patients

Risk Factors

Adequate experience for laparoscopy
Patient suitable for general anesthesia
Absence of severe abdominal adhesions
Tolerance to pneumoperitoneum
No active intra-abdominal infection
No severe coagulopathy
Bilateral hernia indication
