What is Subtotal Colectomy?

In subtotal colectomy the ascending, transverse, descending and most of the sigmoid colon are removed and bowel continuity is restored by ileorectal or ileosigmoid anastomosis.

The main indications are toxic megacolon and severe acute ulcerative colitis, multifocal colon cancer, slow-transit constipation, severe diverticular disease and acute lower gastrointestinal bleeding.

It can be performed open or laparoscopically. Postoperative care includes diarrhoea management, fluid-electrolyte balance, nutritional support and life-long surveillance colonoscopy.

Risk Factors

Severe ulcerative colitis
Multifocal colon cancer
Severe diverticular disease
Slow-transit constipation
Recurrent intestinal obstruction
Acute lower gastrointestinal bleeding
Family history of colon cancer
