What is Scarlet Fever?

Scarlet fever is a pharyngitis with rash that develops as a reaction to erythrogenic exotoxins produced by Streptococcus pyogenes. It is common in children aged 5-15.

It begins with sudden fever, sore throat, and a typical sandpaper-like red rash. 'Strawberry tongue,' perioral pallor (Filatov's sign), and Pastia's lines (darkening at joint creases) are characteristic.

With early diagnosis and antibiotic treatment, possible complications (acute rheumatic fever, post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis) are prevented.

Symptoms

Sudden high fever and chills
Severe sore throat
Sandpaper-like red rash
Spreading from armpit, neck, and groin folds
Strawberry-like red tongue

Peeling on the palms and soles after the rash

Being a child between 5-15 years
School and daycare environments
