What is Rotavirus Gastroenteritis?

Rotavirus is a double-stranded RNA virus from the Reoviridae family and is the most common cause of severe gastroenteritis in children under 5 years worldwide. Transmission occurs via the fecal-oral route; very low viral doses can cause infection.

After a 1-3 day incubation, illness starts with sudden vomiting, watery diarrhea and fever. Symptoms last 3-8 days. Dehydration and electrolyte disturbance are the main complications and can be fatal in young children.

Oral rehydration solutions (ORS) are the cornerstone of treatment. Effective vaccines (Rotarix, RotaTeq) significantly reduce severe rotavirus disease and are part of infant immunization programs in many countries including Türkiye.

Symptoms

Sudden-onset vomiting
Watery diarrhea lasting several days
Low-to-moderate fever
Abdominal pain and cramps
Irritability and crying (in infants)
Dry mouth, sunken eyes, decreased tears
Lethargy and dehydration in severe cases

Risk Factors

Infants and young children aged 6 months to 2 years
Daycare and nursery environments
Infants not enrolled in vaccination programs
Inadequate hygiene and sanitation
Sharing pacifiers or bottles
Increase in winter and spring
High prevalence in developing countries

Fluid therapy with oral rehydration solution (ORS)
02
Continued breastfeeding
