What is Renal Tumor Cryotherapy?

Cryoablation is an ablative treatment in which the lesion is destroyed by argon-helium-driven freeze-thaw cycles. It can be performed percutaneously or laparoscopically.

It is preferred for small renal masses (T1a, generally <3 cm), elderly patients, those with reduced renal reserve, solitary kidneys, multiple lesions, and high surgical risk.

Compared to partial nephrectomy it offers shorter recovery and reduced morbidity but recurrence risk should be discussed; long-term oncological follow-up is required.

Symptoms

Mostly an incidental finding
Macroscopic hematuria
Flank pain
Palpable abdominal mass (advanced)
Weight loss and fatigue
Hypertension (rare)
Anemia and elevated ESR
Asymptomatic in early stages

Risk Factors

Older age
Solitary kidney
Reduced renal function (CKD)
Multiple bilateral renal masses
Hereditary syndromes (VHL, BHD)
High surgical risk and comorbidities
History of prior partial nephrectomy
Refusal of major surgery

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Newly diagnosed small renal mass
  • Reduced renal function with renal mass
  • Solitary kidney with renal lesion
  • Multiple renal lesions
  • Recurrence after partial nephrectomy
  • High risk for major surgery
