What is Renal Transplant?

Renal transplant is a treatment that provides better quality of life and survival than dialysis in chronic kidney failure patients. The kidney obtained from a living or deceased donor is placed extraperitoneally in the recipient's iliac fossa.

Blood group compatibility, HLA matching, and crossmatch are critical for a successful transplant. Lifelong immunosuppressive therapy (calcineurin inhibitors, antimetabolites, steroids) is used to prevent rejection.

Complications include acute/chronic rejection, infections (CMV, BK virus), drug side effects, cardiovascular disease, and increased malignancy risk. Close follow-up and a multidisciplinary approach are critical.
