What is Renal Cell Carcinoma Subtypes?

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common form of malignant tumour originating from the renal parenchyma and accounts for approximately 85-90% of all kidney cancers. It has multiple histological subtypes with different biological behaviours.

The most common subtype is clear-cell RCC (75-80%), which is associated with inactivation of the VHL gene. Papillary RCC (10-15%), chromophobe RCC (5%) and collecting-duct carcinoma (<1%) are other important subtypes.

Each subtype has a different prognosis and treatment response. Molecular targeted therapies and immunotherapy have provided significant successes especially in advanced clear-cell RCC. Subtype assignment is performed by the pathologist and is critical in treatment decisions.
