What is Renal Artery Aneurysm Treatment?

Renal artery aneurysm is the abnormal dilation of the renal artery due to wall weakness. Its incidence is 0.01-1%. Most are asymptomatic and detected incidentally during CT or angiography.

Aneurysms larger than 2 cm, women planning pregnancy and symptomatic cases require treatment. Treatment options range between endovascular (coil embolization, stent-graft) and open surgery (aneurysm resection, bypass, ex-vivo reconstruction).

Rupture risk is 3-5% and rupture mortality is 20-80%. Rupture risk increases significantly during pregnancy, with maternal mortality reaching 55-80%.

Symptoms

Usually asymptomatic (incidental finding)
Renovascular hypertension
Flank pain
Hematuria (bloody urine)
Renal infarction (due to thromboembolism)
Rupture: sudden severe pain and hypotension (emergency)

Risk Factors

Fibromuscular dysplasia
Atherosclerosis
Pregnancy (increased rupture risk)
Congenital vascular anomalies
Marfan syndrome
Ehlers-Danlos syndrome

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • When renal artery aneurysm is detected on CT or angiography
  • In resistant hypertension investigation
  • When aneurysm is present in a woman planning pregnancy
  • Sudden flank pain and drop in blood pressure (suspicion of rupture)

Treatment Methods

01
Endovascular coil embolization (saccular aneurysm)
02
Endovascular stent-graft placement
03
Open surgical aneurysm resection + arterial repair
04
Ex-vivo bench surgery (kidney removed and repaired on the bench)
05
Partial nephrectomy (in segmental aneurysm)
06
Antihypertensive therapy and imaging follow-up (in small aneurysms)
