What is Rectal Prolapse Repair?

Rectal prolapse is the protrusion of the full thickness of the rectum through the anus. It is more common in older women and is associated with chronic constipation, prior pregnancy and pelvic floor weakness. Surgery is the only definitive treatment.

Surgical options are divided into abdominal and perineal approaches. Abdominal options include suture rectopexy, mesh rectopexy and ventral rectopexy (Orr-Loygue, D'Hoore). Perineal options include the Altemeier (perineal rectosigmoidectomy) and Delorme procedures.

Choice of surgery is based on patient age, comorbidity, prolapse size and surgeon experience. Laparoscopic ventral mesh rectopexy (LVMR) has lower recurrence and good functional outcomes.
