What is Radical Nephrectomy?

Radical nephrectomy is the procedure of removing the kidney together with Gerota's fascia, the adrenal gland (if necessary), perinephric fat, surrounding lymph nodes, and vena cava thrombus when needed.

It is indicated in localized large renal tumors and in cases where partial nephrectomy is not appropriate. In small tumors, nephron-sparing surgery (partial nephrectomy) is preferred first.

Laparoscopic and robotic approaches provide less morbidity together with similar oncologic outcomes to open surgery; open surgery still retains its place in large and complex tumors.
