What is Prophylactic Mastectomy?

Prophylactic mastectomy is the surgical removal of breast tissue in women at high risk of breast cancer. It is an option for BRCA1/2 mutation carriers, those with a strong family history, and prior breast cancer patients.

Bilateral risk-reducing mastectomy reduces breast cancer risk by 90-95%. Skin- and nipple-sparing mastectomy is a modern technique that improves cosmetic outcomes with comparable oncological safety.

This decision requires multidisciplinary evaluation. Genetic counseling, psychological support, plastic surgery consultation, and detailed informed consent are critical. Alternatives include close surveillance and chemoprevention.

Presence of BRCA1/2 mutation
Strong family history
Previous breast cancer
Atypical hyperplasia
Lobular carcinoma in situ
