What is Preoperative Preparation?

Preoperative preparation involves comprehensive evaluation of the patient's health status before surgical intervention, identification of risks, performance of necessary tests, and informing the patient.

Preoperative evaluation includes blood tests, ECG, chest X-ray, as well as anesthesia consultation. Chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or heart disease should be optimized before surgery.

Enhanced recovery protocols (ERAS) include evidence-based practices such as preoperative carbohydrate loading, early mobilization, and multimodal pain management. These protocols shorten hospital stays and reduce complications.

Symptoms

This topic is not a disease but a process guide
Share your health status with your team for pre-anesthesia evaluation
Report all medications, herbal supplements, and allergy history you use
If you smoke, quitting at least 4-6 weeks before surgery accelerates recovery
Blood thinners are usually stopped a few days before surgery

Risk Factors

Advanced age and multiple chronic diseases
Obesity (anesthesia and wound healing risk)
Smoking (pulmonary complications and wound healing)
Diabetes (infection and wound healing risk)
Use of blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs
Previous history of anesthesia-related complications

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • For preoperative evaluation before planned surgery
  • To learn the impact of chronic medication use on surgery
  • To get information about anesthesia type and risks
  • For diabetes or hypertension control before surgery
  • For specialist optimization if there is respiratory or heart disease

Treatment Methods

01
Preoperative tests: complete blood count, biochemistry, coagulation tests, ECG, and echocardiography if necessary
02
Anesthesia consultation and ASA risk classification
03
Optimization of chronic diseases (HbA1c <7.5, blood pressure control)
04
Avoidance of solid food 6-8 hours before surgery, and fluids 2 hours before (fasting protocol)
05
Preoperative skin cleansing and hair removal protocol
06
Signing of informed consent form and psychological preparation
