What is Posterior Urethral Valve Treatment?

Posterior urethral valve is a congenital anomaly characterized by abnormal mucosal folds in the posterior urethra and is the most common congenital cause of bladder outlet obstruction in newborn boys.

It may be diagnosed antenatally with bilateral hydronephrosis and oligohydramnios, or postnatally with weak voiding stream, urinary retention and renal failure. Confirmed by VCUG and cystoscopy.

Endoscopic valve ablation is the first-line treatment. Long-term complications include renal failure, vesicoureteral reflux, bladder dysfunction (valve bladder syndrome) and infertility.

Symptoms

Antenatal bilateral hydronephrosis
Oligohydramnios
Weak voiding stream and dribbling
Urinary retention
Recurrent urinary tract infection
Failure to thrive
Elevated creatinine
Pulmonary hypoplasia

Risk Factors

Male sex (only)
Antenatally detected hydronephrosis
Oligohydramnios
Family history
Other genitourinary anomalies
Renal dysplasia
Antenatal vesicoureteral reflux
Newborn renal insufficiency
