What is Post-Operative Nutrition?

Post-operative nutrition aims to maximize the body's healing capacity by ensuring adequate intake of energy, protein, and micronutrients during the recovery period after surgery.

Modern ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) protocols recommend early oral feeding (when possible, on the day of surgery), preoperative correction of malnutrition, and avoidance of prolonged fasting.

Nutrition protocols differ significantly across operations such as bowel surgery, bariatric surgery, and upper gastrointestinal surgery; therefore, personalized dietitian follow-up is essential.

Symptoms

Post-operative nausea and loss of appetite are common
Oral feeding is restricted after small bowel surgery until gas and stool passage normalize
Staged nutrition after bariatric surgery: liquid → puree → soft → normal diet
Signs of malnutrition (excessive weight loss, poor wound healing, muscle weakness) may occur
Constipation due to analgesics is a frequent complication

Risk Factors

Preoperative malnutrition (especially in cancer patients)
Advanced age and poor oral health
Diabetes and metabolic disorders
Long-term parenteral (intravenous) feeding dependence
Risk of malabsorption after bowel resection

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Inadequate oral intake after discharge
  • Persistent excessive weight loss, weakness, or non-healing wounds
  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea lasting longer than 1 week post-op
  • Vitamin deficiency symptoms after bariatric surgery (numbness, hair loss)
  • For evaluation of transition to nutritional support (enteral or parenteral)

Treatment Methods

01
Early oral feeding: liquids often started the same day after laparoscopic surgery
02
High-protein diet: 1.2-1.5 g/kg/day protein to prevent muscle loss and poor wound healing
03
Oral nutritional supplements (ONS): ready-made protein-energy fortified beverages
04
Enteral nutrition: tube feeding via nasogastric or jejunostomy when the digestive tract is functional
05
Parenteral nutrition: intravenous nutritional support when the bowel is non-functional
06
Personalized nutrition plan and regular follow-up by a registered dietitian
