What is Pediatric Meningitis?

Pediatric meningitis is inflammation of the meninges in children caused by viral or bacterial pathogens. In neonates, group B streptococcus, E. coli, and Listeria predominate; in older children, meningococcus, pneumococcus, and Haemophilus are leading bacterial causes.

Clinical findings vary by age and may be nonspecific in young infants. Urgent lumbar puncture and prompt initiation of empirical therapy are vital to outcomes.

Vaccination programs (Hib, pneumococcal, meningococcal conjugate) have markedly reduced the incidence of bacterial meningitis.

Symptoms

High fever and irritability
Neck stiffness and bulging fontanelle (in infants)
Altered consciousness and seizure
Vomiting and feeding difficulties
Petechial rash (meningococcemia)

Risk Factors

Young age and prematurity
Lack of vaccination
Recent meningitis exposure
Immunodeficiency
Ear or sinus infections

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If a child has fever with irritability and lethargy
  • If neck stiffness and vomiting accompany
  • If a petechial rash is present (emergency)
  • If a seizure develops

Treatment Methods

01
Urgent lumbar puncture and culture
02
Empirical broad-spectrum antibiotics (ceftriaxone ± vancomycin)
03
Ampicillin combination in neonates
04
Dexamethasone (in selected cases)
05
Supportive care and intensive care
06
Chemoprophylaxis for contacts
