What is Parathyroid Adenoma Surgery?

About 85% of primary hyperparathyroidism is due to a single parathyroid adenoma. This adenoma secretes excess parathyroid hormone, leading to complications such as hypercalcemia, kidney stones, osteoporosis, and psychiatric findings.

In modern surgery, minimally invasive parathyroidectomy (MIP) is preferred. Preoperative localization studies (ultrasonography, sestamibi scintigraphy, 4D-CT) identify the adenoma.

Intraoperative rapid PTH measurement (Miami criteria: a drop to more than 50% below the baseline) is the gold standard for confirming surgical success.
