What is Norovirus Outbreak?

Norovirus is a single-stranded RNA virus from the Caliciviridae family and is the most common cause of acute gastroenteritis worldwide across all age groups. It is estimated to cause 19-21 million gastroenteritis cases per year in the United States alone.

The virus is extremely contagious; only 18-20 viral particles are sufficient for infection. Transmission is fecal-oral and vomitus-oral, and it also spreads through contaminated food, water and surfaces. It causes outbreaks in communal settings (cruise ships, nursing homes, schools, hospitals).

The incubation period is 12-48 hours and illness usually lasts 1-3 days. A vaccine is not yet in widespread use; hygiene and isolation remain the cornerstone of outbreak control.

Symptoms

Sudden-onset vomiting
Watery, non-bloody diarrhea
Abdominal pain and cramps
Nausea and headache
Low-grade fever and myalgia
Malaise and loss of appetite
Usually resolves within 24-72 hours

Risk Factors

Communal living settings (dormitories, military barracks, ships)
Restaurant and catering food
Inadequate hand hygiene
Close contact with a sick person
Consumption of contaminated water and seafood
Nursing homes and hospitals
Winter months (winter vomiting disease)

  • Lethargy in infants and young children

Treatment Methods

01
Oral rehydration and fluid support

Maintenance of electrolyte balance
