What is Nephrectomy Techniques?

Nephrectomy is the surgical removal of all (radical/total) or part (partial) of a kidney, performed for renal tumors, severe trauma, infection, donor transplantation, or non-functioning kidneys. The choice of technique depends on indication and tumor characteristics.

Modern approaches include open nephrectomy via flank or transperitoneal incision, laparoscopic nephrectomy with smaller incisions and faster recovery, and robotic-assisted nephrectomy offering enhanced precision for complex cases including partial nephrectomy.

Partial nephrectomy preserves nephron function in T1 tumors, while radical nephrectomy is reserved for larger or central tumors. Living donor nephrectomy uses laparoscopic or robotic techniques to minimize donor morbidity.

Symptoms

Renal mass on imaging
Hematuria
Flank pain
Symptoms of renal trauma
Recurrent infections in non-functioning kidney
Hypertension from renal cause

  • Refractory renal hypertension
  • Recurrent severe infections
  • Discussion of preservation versus removal
