What is Neonatal Seborrhea (Cradle Cap)?

Neonatal seborrhea is a benign condition characterized by yellowish greasy crusts on the scalp and face that emerge as a result of activation of sebaceous glands by maternal androgens.

It is usually seen within the first three months and disappears spontaneously by six months. Itching is rare and the baby's general condition is not affected.

Atopic dermatitis should be considered in the differential diagnosis; dermatologic evaluation is important in widespread or refractory cases.

Symptoms

Yellow, greasy crusts on the scalp
Mild erythema on face and behind the ears
Rarely redness in the groin and axillae
Itching and irritability are usually absent

Risk Factors

First months of life
Maternal hormonal effect
Inadequate scalp care by family and caregivers

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If widespread redness and oozing develop
  • If lesions persist beyond 6 months
  • If the baby's irritability or itching increases
  • If feeding and sleep are affected

Treatment Methods

01
Regular washing with gentle baby shampoo
02
Application of softening mineral oil
03
Softening and removal of thick crusts
04
Mild topical antifungal (if needed)
05
Short-term low-potency topical steroid (severe cases)
