What is Mumps?

Mumps is an acute viral disease caused by the mumps virus of the Paramyxoviridae family, usually manifesting with parotid gland involvement. It is transmitted by respiratory droplets and direct contact.

The disease starts with fever, weakness, and headache after an incubation period of 16-18 days; then unilateral or bilateral parotid gland swelling (hamster-cheek appearance) emerges. Pain can increase with chewing and swallowing.

Orchitis (testicular inflammation), oophoritis, meningitis, encephalitis, pancreatitis, and deafness are important complications. It is a disease preventable by effective vaccine (MMR); however, outbreaks can occasionally be seen with declining vaccine attitudes.

Symptoms

Unilateral or bilateral swelling and pain in the parotid gland
Fever, weakness, and muscle aches
Headache and loss of appetite
Pain that increases with chewing and swallowing
Testicular pain and swelling (orchitis in adult males)
Abdominal pain (suspected pancreatitis)
Neck stiffness and headache (meningitis)

Risk Factors

Unvaccinated individuals or those with single-dose MMR
Crowded living conditions (schools, boarding environments)
Exposure during outbreak periods
Immune system suppression
Children between 5-15 years of age
Military camp and university environments
Travel to vaccine gap areas

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Parotid gland swelling and high fever
  • Testicular pain and swelling (in men)
  • Neck stiffness, severe headache, vomiting
  • Abdominal pain (suspected pancreatitis)
  • Hearing loss or balance disorder
