What is Minimally Invasive Thyroid Surgery?

Minimally invasive thyroid surgery encompasses techniques performed through smaller incisions or distant entry points compared to standard open thyroidectomy. It includes minimally invasive video-assisted thyroidectomy (MIVAT), endoscopic, robotic and transoral approaches.

Patient selection is important: tumor size, lobe volume, malignancy potential and patient anatomy are decisive factors. Recurrent laryngeal nerve monitoring (IONM) and preservation of parathyroid blood supply are essential for surgical safety.

Cosmetic advantages, less postoperative pain and shorter recovery are the principal benefits. Robotic transoral (TOETVA) approach leaves no visible incision. The surgeon's experience and case volume directly determine outcomes.
