What is Marburg Fever?

Marburg virus disease (MVD) is a severe viral hemorrhagic fever caused by Marburg virus from the filovirus family, with the natural reservoir being Rousettus aegyptiacus (Egyptian fruit bat).

Transmission is sustained by human-to-human transition after contact with bats. It spreads through direct contact with patient blood, secretions, tissues, and body fluids.

Mortality varies between 24-88%. There is no specific approved treatment; early supportive care increases survival.

Symptoms

Sudden onset of high fever
Severe headache and muscle pain
Abdominal pain and diarrhea
Rash from day 5 onwards
Mucosal and cutaneous bleeding
Liver and kidney failure
Shock and multi-organ dysfunction

Risk Factors

Cave entry in Africa (fruit bat exposure)
Close contact with infected patient
Healthcare workers (in-hospital transmission)
Laboratory workers
Travel to endemic regions
Contact during funeral rituals
Inadequate protective equipment

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Fever and weakness after returning from endemic area
  • When bleeding signs emerge
  • Symptom development after suspected patient contact
  • When rash, diarrhea, vomiting accompany
  • In case of rapid deterioration in general condition

Treatment Methods

01
Emergency isolation and infection control
02
Aggressive fluid-electrolyte support
03
Bleeding control and blood products
04
Support for organ dysfunction
05
Experimental antiviral drugs and antibody therapies
