What is Mallory-Weiss Syndrome?

Mallory-Weiss syndrome is upper gastrointestinal bleeding characterized by a longitudinal tear involving the mucosa and submucosa at the gastroesophageal junction following severe vomiting, retching, or coughing.

The syndrome was first described by Mallory and Weiss in 1929. The main causes include alcohol abuse, hyperemesis gravidarum, bulimia, severe coughing, and endoscopic trauma. It is responsible for approximately 5-15% of upper GI bleeding.

In most cases bleeding stops spontaneously, but some patients require endoscopic or surgical intervention. Endoscopy is the gold standard for both diagnosis and treatment. The prognosis is generally good.
