What is Male Infertility (Detailed)?

Male infertility is the evaluation of infertility as male-related when pregnancy is not achieved within one year despite unprotected intercourse. A male factor is found alone or in combination in approximately 40-50% of couples.

Causes include pretesticular (hormonal), testicular (varicocele, infections, chromosomal anomalies, KIT mutations) and post-testicular (ductal obstruction, ejaculation disorders) factors. Genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors also play a role.

Evaluation involves a detailed history, physical examination, at least two semen analyses, hormonal tests (FSH, LH, testosterone), genetic testing and scrotal ultrasound when needed. Treatment is planned with medical therapy, microsurgery (varicocelectomy, vasovasostomy) and assisted reproductive techniques (IUI, IVF, ICSI).
