What is Lassa Fever?

Lassa fever is an acute viral hemorrhagic fever caused by Lassa virus transmitted from Mastomys rodents to humans. It is endemic in West Africa.

Transmission occurs through contact with food or items contaminated with rodent feces and urine. It can also be transmitted from patient to patient (especially in hospital settings).

Most cases are mild, but in severe cases, hemorrhagic presentation, liver and kidney failure, and permanent deafness may be seen.

Symptoms

Sudden onset of fever and weakness
Sore throat and cough
Muscle and joint pain
Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
Mucosal hemorrhage (in severe cases)
Facial edema
Hearing loss (late complication)

Risk Factors

Living/traveling in West African countries
Homes with rodent infestation
Contaminated food exposure
Healthcare workers (in-hospital transmission)
Laboratory workers
Contact with infected persons
Inadequate hygiene conditions

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • When fever and weakness occur after being in an endemic area
  • When bleeding signs (nose, gums) emerge
  • When facial edema, shortness of breath develops
  • When hearing loss is added
  • If symptoms occur after suspected Lassa contact

Treatment Methods

01
Early ribavirin therapy (effective)
02
Fluid and electrolyte support
03
Bleeding control and blood products
04
Supportive treatment for organ failure
05
Strict isolation and infection control
06
Follow-up of contacts
