What is Laparoscopic Inguinal Hernia Repair?

Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair is a minimally invasive technique using TEP (totally extraperitoneal) or TAPP (transabdominal preperitoneal) access to place a polypropylene mesh covering the myopectineal orifice.

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and offers especially favorable results in bilateral or recurrent inguinal hernias, in patients with both inguinal and femoral defects, and in athletes with an active lifestyle.

Compared with open Lichtenstein repair, laparoscopic repair provides less postoperative pain, faster return to work, and a lower incidence of chronic groin pain, while requiring more operative time and laparoscopic expertise.

Symptoms

Visible or palpable bulge in the groin
Discomfort or pulling sensation that worsens with coughing, lifting, or prolonged standing
Episodes of groin pain that subside with lying down
Recurrent or bilateral inguinal hernia
Sudden severe pain, vomiting, or non-reducible bulge — possible incarceration or strangulation

Risk Factors

Male sex and advancing age
Chronic cough, smoking, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Heavy lifting and strenuous occupations
Constipation and benign prostatic enlargement with straining
Obesity, prior abdominal surgery, and connective tissue disorders

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Bilateral or recurrent inguinal hernia after open repair
  • Chronic groin pain associated with a reducible inguinal bulge
  • Sudden, severe groin pain with vomiting or non-reducible swelling — emergency consultation
  • Active lifestyle requiring rapid return to work and exercise

Treatment Methods

01
Preoperative evaluation, anesthesia assessment, and planning of TEP or TAPP technique
02
Laparoscopic placement of polypropylene mesh covering the myopectineal orifice
03
Multimodal postoperative analgesia and early mobilization
04
Gradual return to daily activities and avoidance of heavy lifting for 3 to 6 weeks
05
Long-term follow-up to detect recurrence or chronic groin pain
